That year I finished the Mimosa Culottes (OOP, out of print) by Named Clothing, a Finnish pattern company that designs for 5’8″. I’m 5′ 7″ (170 cm) and when I first wrote this post in 2017, I hadn’t really given much thought to the height that patterns are designed for. Each size is designed for a particular bust, waist and hip measurement, but not every company provides the sewing pattern height. For example, Deer and Doe designs for an hour-glass shape, Cashmerette Patterns for curvy figures (cup sizes C–H), Sew DIY for tall women, and Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick Patterns (SBCC) and Petite Plus for petite ladies.
Luckily, some indie sewing patterns design for a particular body type. We come in all shapes and sizes, which can make it challenging to find a sewing pattern that fits your body. Upper arm width: Wrap your measuring tape around the thickest part of your arm near the armpit.Everyone’s body is different.Shoulder length: Measure from the neck to the edge of the shoulder.Sleeve length: Hold the tape from the shoulder down the arm as long as you want the sleeve to be.Chest for men or women's clothing: Measure across the widest part of your chest above your bust.Back length and width: Measure from the neck to the waist to find the length and measure across the widest part of your back to find the width.Hips: Wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips.Neck for men's shirts: Wrap the tape around the neck where the collar of the shirt will sit.Height for dresses: Stand straight against a wall and have someone measure from the top of your head to the base of your feet.Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist.Bust for women's clothing: Wrap the tape around the widest part of your bust.In order to create accurate patterns that fit you well, you'll need to use a soft measuring tape and write down the following measurements:
